October 10, 2002 report by Anthony Lorenzo:
Well, we came, we lit up, and the media ignored us again.

I would like to thank everyone who came. We had three candidates for state house of representatives: Jim Clifford, Ron Stringfield, and Tyson Richards (who happens to be running in my district). The Jordans made it out to the vigil from sarasota. I will not mention everyone who made it, but thank you for coming.

Early on we were asked to get off the property by the security guards. Someone paged me and told me they were calling all the local media to let them know we were out there. I didn't catch who it was, but thanks to them too.

Peace,
Anthony

PS i forgot to report that Tuesday we protested Laura Bush's visit to Tampa with weallcount.org and I stood outside the convention with my sign that said, "my daughter deserves rehab too." I got lots of smiles from the business as usual supporters.

September 22, 2002 report by Anthony Lorenzo:
Congratulations to the warriors who stood without fear tonight.

WMNF let people know we were working on it. The major corporate media ignored us again (surprise).

We stood out there for an hour with candles blowing in the wind. The Libertarians sent quite an entourage and the Greens were absent as usual. I am seriously thinking of changing my party affiliation...

Anyways, we will organize another action for October 7 for Epis' sentencing date. This time we will hit Fox's local affiliate.

We actually got some great responses from the sports people at ABC who told us to come back tomorrow for the game.

We had an excellent turn-out tonight for the vigil. I would like to congratulate everyone who showed up and made their voice heard. Thank you for not being afraid.

August 18, 2002

report by Jodi James:
The city of Palm Bay just wasn't thinking clearly when they were dragging their feet giving a special events permit to a CAN member. This little piece in the FL Today Newspaper makes about 5 articles since the June 26, 2002 about the campaign.

Although this wasn't officially a law suit on behalf of CAN, the names are the same, the players are the same and the result is the same. More people will have access to public forums and CAN chalks up its 9th Free Assembly win against Florida principalities since 1995.

Most important, the resources that you gain through FL CAN should transfer into other areas of your life empowering you to go further than you ever dreamed you could.

May 22, 2002 report by Alvin Mites:
If you have ever heard of Straight Inc, or wonder why we are protesting Betty Sembler June 8th then you may wish to look at FoxNews.com's report "Drug War Casualties" it is the first mainstream news article seen to have covered a complete view of Straight Inc's history with suicides, rapes, forced abortions, and molestation just to begin the list.
May 13, 2002 report by Alvin Mites:
Whether you tire of the war on drugs as we all do, or simply wish to understand why so many of us fight against its inhumane and often unconstitutional methods then I urge you to read this essay submitted by Wilson Beard.
May 8, 2002 report by Alvin Mites:
A couple of days late but a write up for the May 4th Liberation Day Parade in Melbourne has been completed. If you would like to know what you missed, see Here.
May 7, 2002 Scott Bledsoe one of the Organizers of the Jax Hempfest has completed a press release of the days events. It may be read Here.
April 27, 2002 Report by Anthony Lorenzo:
For Livestock 2002 we went and passed out what we could and collected lots of email addresses. I met some really nice (and attractive) ladies at the festival, though most lived in other states or no where near tampa. The FL CAN mailing list if up over 700 now in just 5 months! Thanks for everyone who referred a friend or signed the list to be added. i had too much fun at livestock and will place it on my calendar for the future years.
April 20, 2002 The Fifth Annual Jax Hempfest went great!
There was a very large turnout of people looking to learn about cannabis, and against its prohibition. All the bands that played performed well, a recording of which can be heard Here. Our own Kevin Aplin gave a terrific speech on protecting yourself against illegal searches, and Scott Bledsoe was able to speak throughout the day on cannabis its prohibition, and how we the people can bring the war on us through voting.
A great deal of voter registrations and medical marijuana petitions were collected, and quite a few of those in attendance seemed eager to join us in Melbourne for the May 4th Million Marijuana March.
See the Florida Times coverage Here.
April 20, 2002 The First Annual Seminole Hempfest went great given the constraint of having to sue for the permit. With Uncle John's band playing live on the stage; dead music was great. Not much of a turnout, but we gave some drug war facts and medical marijuana, legal consequences. A few reporters came out to join the festivities. Anthony Lorenzo received a chance to speak with the police extensively about drug reform. Though they seemed to ignore the facts and continue to believe the gateway drug theory.
See the St Petersburg Times article on the festival Here.
April 15, 2002 Democracy Rising was a huge success. We found a lot of interest in the progressive community in Cannabis law reform, especially amongst the younger crowd. A list was collected of approximately 70 people to add to our email list. We collected lots of petitions.. We were joined by our brothers and sisters from FORML, UCF NORML, USF NORML, American Cannabis Society, November Coalition, and Drug olicy Forum of Florida.
April 12, 2002 Executive Director of FL CAN Jodi James has announced her canidacy for state House of Representatives for district 31.
For additional details see Here.
March 21, 2002 Given the time of our visit which was not only the 30th anniversary of the shaffer report, but also the final days of congressional hearings many congressmen have not yet been able to state their position for medical marijuana. The majority of those approached seemed infavor but were simply affraid to be the first to express it. Perhaps they did not understand the message "If not Now When, if not You Who!"
For a more detailed report of events see Here.
March 17, 2002 The protest at Dave Weldon's office has been released on video to the internet at Pot-TV, through the Stoner Show. This is quite good coverage of the events that day, including Willah lighting a joint in Dave Weldon's office proving to us that for atleast one day Medical Marijuana was Legal in Florida.
March 2, 2002 FORML'S 5th. Annual Washington's Birthday Hemp Festival amid gusting winds and substitutions in the line up of the performance artists. A small, but enthusiastic crowd grooved to the sounds of the bands Salomi Mommy, Espionage, Eve's Reason, T-Blue, and Jerrods Door. While national and local marjiunana reform advocates such as Jeff Brown, Bud Green, Cathy Jordan, John Chase, Patty Montgomery, Michael Palmieri and others who spoke about the need to reform the laws in the Sate of Florida between sets. Hemp ,Food and Smoking assessories were plentiful .
Febuary 26, 2002 FL CAN Volunteers Nick and Sabrina (Melbourne, FL) attended the annual Rainbow Gathering this year, setting up and maintaining a FL CAN presence at the gathering. For a more detailed account of the Gathering see Here. FL CAN would like to thank all the volunteers who are making a difference everyday by speaking out about the devastating effects of the Drug War. Nick and Sabrina found what they CAN do and we are pleased to provide them the tools to do it. Look for FL CAN at Rainbow 2003.
Febuary 15, 2002 While turnout at Dave Weldon's office was low due to the short notice given, the message was effective. Despite smoking a joint in the representatives office Willa Elam was not arrested, nor were police ever called. We are working on our own coverage of the event, but for now see Here for the Florida Times coverage. Currently another event is being planned with the same goal, if you'd like more details concerning what is planned contact Kevin Aplin at 321-726-6656.
Febuary 9, 2002 Marleyfest was to put it simply, awesome. Despite much bad weather a new visitors to the High Times / NORML booth were frequent and, alot of signatures were gathered for the medical petition.
A more detailed descrition of events is coming, including pictures but suffice to say if you missed Marleyfest you missed a very good time.
Febuary 8, 2002 Hemp food ban has been delayed for an additional 40 days, and given the DOJ report from 2000 it is believed the DEA will lose the court ruling. For a more detailed description of why the DEA backed down so quickly see Here. We all thank VoteHemp.com for such a quick and organized response to the DEA.
January 26, 2002 A written description of the events of Tobacco Road are still coming in, however a good time was had by all, and alot of petitions were signed for the medical marijuana initiative.
January 24, 2002 The Express Yourself meeting at the Melbourne Community center went well, a tape was made for Pot-TV to show more how to use their first ammendment rights. All that attended seemed to benefit from gaining knoweledge in how to deal with different situations involving free speech events. To see an overview of this short class see Express Yourself

Only recently has his bond hearing been unsealed with help from FL CAN, however we have completed all we can and are currently setting up a legal fund for his defense.
For more information about Hobart's current charges see Here.
January 2, 2002 The Hemp Mobile owned by Dennis (Murli) Watkins (AKA the Gainesville Doobie Tosser) has recently been donated to the museum. We are asking that anyone with items related to the Gainesville Doobie Toss, any of the 11 annual Gainesville Hemp Festivals, homegrown video testimony of the Doobie Tosses, homegrown video of the event or photos from the events please donate them. We would also like to see donations of original artwork, a hat, a wallet and
most importantly a copy of the Doobie Tosser Video.
